Trauma is extremely common in our society

 

The American Psychiatric Association in 2020, found that 1 in 11 people have a PTSD diagnosis, and that women are 2 times more likely to have PTSD than men. 

PTSD is ‘post-traumatic stress disorder’ which means stress that comes from a traumatic experience. Successful PTSD treatment is one of the most sought-after therapeutic treatments in the U.S. 

Different forms of trauma can include life threatening trauma like sexual assault, war, physical abuse, a natural disaster, or a serious accident. Or it can include non-life threatening (but equally traumatic) forms such as a traumatic medical procedure, childhood neglect, grief and loss, religious trauma, bullying, racial trauma, generational trauma, and being excluded from your society based on identity. 

Some forms of trauma can even be the result of watching someone else go through a traumatic event. This is called vicarious trauma. Many people today are experiencing this due to the pandemic. 

While trauma is prevalent in our society, the good news is, trauma therapy has come a long way in the past 20 years, and we now have many ways to successfully treat it so that people can get back to the life they want to live. Finding a PTSD therapist that fits your needs is incredibly helpful in moving towards a more fulfilling life.

How EMDR Therapy can help you

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been empirically researched and is one of only two approved treatments by the World Health Organization for trauma and PTSD. It has been recognized in multiple published meta-analysis studies around the world for its effective treatment of trauma and PTSD. 

You will find with EMDR that we use bilateral eye movements that are similar to REM sleep, which help to process information in your brain. Traumatic memories are stored in your fight or flight system, whereas regular, adaptive memories actually help calm down the fight or flight system. EMDR will help process your traumatic memories so that they are able to be restored to the appropriate memory unit in your brain, so that when you recall the memories, they will no longer activate your fight, flight, or freeze mode. 

Do current reminders of your trauma set you off your rails, throwing you into a fit of anger, fear, despair, or intense sadness? 

EMDR stops this cycle in its tracks because after reprocessing is complete, you will no longer react with such intensity to daily reminders of your trauma. The things that normally throw you off, will now only be a slight irritant, rather than an explosive reaction.

Keep in mind that your history will always be a part of your life. Many people find after EMDR treatment that they can choose which memories are helpful, and which ones are not. In addition, they are able to recall all memories, but the past will no longer be controlling your life, because the intense emotional reaction has been reduced tremendously.

My personal approach to EMDR therapy is to join you exactly where you are at, today. I want you to feel that you can come in exactly as you are and that you will never be judged by me, only supported, and appreciated. I will celebrate your unique identities with you in a safe, brave environment. 

I too have been affected by PTSD. I have a personal history with multiple forms of trauma and have spent the last 8 years training to become the therapist that I always needed. I have found therapy to be instrumental in being able to live my best life with my children, partner, family, friends, and community. 

After EMDR therapy, you will be able to store your traumatic memories safely and effectively, allowing yourself the ability to react with grace and compassion, rather than anger, fear, or disengagement. This will allow you to finally live the life you want and become even closer to the people that mean the most to you.

It’s normal to have concerns about starting EMDR Therapy

Therapy is not cheap, is it even worth it?

Therapy is not cheap, it’s true. I recognize this fully and understand the commitment it takes to invest in yourself. I believe that if people are willing to invest in their physical health and happiness, it is equally important to invest in your mental wellbeing. In addition, EMDR is recognized as one of the fastest, most efficient forms of therapy. Using EMDR as a treatment means that you may be in therapy for a shorter amount of time in the long run, helping to cut down significantly on the investment. Investing in yourself now can have some major long-term rewards. 

I can say that before I started therapy, I was having difficulty in all of my relationships, I was not communicating effectively, and I was letting my emotions take control to the point that I felt like I was in the backseat watching with horror, at my relationships falling apart. Therapy helped me manage my emotions, my thoughts, and ultimately, allowed me to regain the relationships that meant everything to me. Many people agree and have found therapy to be INCREDIBLY helpful and worthwhile in managing their emotions, thoughts, and memories, as well as in restoring positive relationships with the people they love most. It is my goal for you to find immeasurable value in therapy as well. 

How long will I need to be in therapy?

This is different for each individual. The good news is that EMDR Therapy is proven to be one of the quickest therapeutic approaches, allowing people to get back to their normal lives as soon as possible. EMDR can range from 3 months to 3 years or more, but the average time frame is between 8-12 month of weekly or bi-weekly (every other week) treatment sessions. 

I see that your sessions are online. How can I be sure online therapy is private and confidential?

We will use ONLY private and confidential software. I will send you a unique online meeting link directly to your email and calendar, and it has built in HIPPA compliant software. I will practice therapy from a private office, and I suggest that all clients find a private location that is free from distractions as well. 

Will online EMDR therapy be as effective as in person therapy?

I have been involved in online therapy for years and have found it to be very beneficial for several reasons. One, you can take comfort in your own home, finding a spot that feels most appropriate to you for healing. You don’t have to awkwardly find a parking spot or walk into a new location. Two, you don’t have to worry about running into anyone you know while you are out attending therapy. Three, it is very efficient for a busy schedule. Online therapy allows you to simply open your laptop and begin, rather than having a 30-minute drive time before and after sessions. Last, online EMDR Therapy has been proven to be AS effective as in person therapy. We will use an online platform with a timed eye movement tool, rather than the therapist moving their arms back and forth in front of your face which can be less consistent as using the online tool. I believe you will find online therapy to be helpful and beneficial.

I am a family person, who identifies as Bisexual and/or Queer. I’m married to a wonderful partner and have two amazing children. I’m a huge animal lover and will try to cuddle with just about all of them!

My journey was not always an easy one. I have past experiences with trauma from childhood through young adulthood and have had to work through many emotionally tumultuous events myself. Therapy was one of the things that ultimately helped me be the best version of myself that I could be for myself and my family. My kids have always been my biggest motivator, both personally and professionally. 

I had an opportunity to live in Hawaii in my early 20’s and it was an amazing place for finding joy along my journey. There, I learned to appreciate the beauty and bountiful earth, connect with myself and feminism, and find time to play and enjoy being alive! Adventure, connection, and family are three of my top values, and I incorporate them into my life as often as possible.
